Dehydration is defined as when you lose as little as 1.5% of the water in your body. Because the human body is made up of 60% water, losing even a little of that amount can result in dizziness, fatigue, headache, dry skin, mood swings, delayed cognitive function, and dry mouth. 

However, summer weather aside, there are ways in which you can become dehydrated. Here are three surprising culprits behind why you are dehydrated.


  1. Your prescription side-effects
    Dry mouth is often a side effect of many prescription drugs and so is dehydration. Because prescription drugs can sometimes work as diuretics, it often causes your body to release more fluid than it takes in. 

    This is the same for medications given to you via a medical clinic that may cause diarrhea or vomiting. Be sure when you take these types of medications that you're drinking more water than usual in order to make up for the increased loss of it.

  2. Your low-carb diet
    Low-carb diets may be great on paper because they help you lose weight. But your initial weight loss from cutting carbohydrates from your diet may actually be water weight as carbs and water are often stored in the same places in the body. 

    Therefore, instead of cutting out carbohydrates altogether, consider eating whole grain carbs like brown rice and oatmeal. Not only are they filled with nutrients and vitamins that are good for you and can actually help you lose weight, but they'll help you stay hydrated because of the water they soak up while cooking.

  3. Your period
    When menstruating, your levels of estrogen and progesterone fluctuate which causes your hydration levels to fluctuate as well. The loss of blood can also reduce the amount of fluid in your body, which can increase the risk of dehydration. Therefore, be sure you're drinking plenty of water during your cycle in order to keep yourself feeling healthy.

Mild dehydration can be treated with rest and drinking water. However, should you or a loved one become dangerously dehydrated it's important to seek medical help at a medical clinic immediately.
